Platinum (unwrought) export import. Worldwide sales of platinum exports from all countries totaled US$63.6 billion in 2020.

The value of overall platinum exports jumped by an average 199.5% for all exporting countries since 2016 when platinum shipments were valued at $21.2 billion.

From 2019 to 2020, the value of global platinum exports increased by 56.5%.

The 5 biggest exporters of platinum are the United Kingdom, South Africa, United States of America, Russia and Germany. Collectively, that handful of platinum sellers on international markets accounted for 71.9% of globally exported platinum during 2020.

Among continents, suppliers in European countries sold the highest dollar worth of exported platinum during 2020 with shipments valued at $36.7 billion or 57.7% of the global total. In second place were African exporters at 17% while 16.2% of worldwide platinum shipments originated from North America. Another 9% worth came from Asia.

Tinier percentages arrived from Latin America (0.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania (0.01%) mostly New Zealand and Australia.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for unwrought or semi-manufactured platinum is 7110. Also included in that code prefix are palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium and ruthenium.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of platinum during 2020.

  1. United Kingdom: US$11.6 billion (18.2% of total platinum exports)
  2. South Africa: $10.7 billion (16.8%)
  3. United States: $9.8 billion (15.5%)
  4. Russia: $7.8 billion (12.3%)
  5. Germany: $5.7 billion (9%)
  6. Belgium: $4 billion (6.3%)
  7. Italy: $3.8 billion (6%)
  8. Hong Kong: $2.6 billion (4.1%)
  9. Switzerland: $2.5 billion (3.9%)
  10. Japan: $1.6 billion (2.5%)
  11. Norway: $603.8 million (0.9%)
  12. Canada: $469.2 million (0.7%)
  13. South Korea: $463.8 million (0.7%)
  14. Singapore: $349.8 million (0.5%)
  15. Taiwan: $316.1 million (0.5%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 98% of globally exported platinum in 2020.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing exporters of platinum since 2019 were: South Korea (up 203.2%), Hong Kong (up 166%), United States (up 108.1%) and Singapore (up 69.5%).

Those countries that posted the most modest gains in their international sales of platinum were led by: Canada (up 24.3%), Switzerland (up 25.8%), Taiwan (up 27.6%), South Africa (up 29.3%) and Germany (up 40.1%).
